Points International Residency Exhibition IV

On November 23, 2019, the Fourth International Residency Exhibition of Points Center for Contemporary Art was officially opened. This exhibition was launched by Carina Hesper & Jan Misker (Netherlands), Sveta Shuvaeva (Russia), and Chinese artists Yang Xinjia and Mo Jiaqing. Through the multiple perspectives of international artists exploring forms of creation and performance inspired by the residency environment, this exhibition presents art from Points’ fourth round of residency and deepens the local cultural landscape.

The Forth residency exhibition this time presents a richer space planning, making full use of Points’ characteristic buildings and outdoor spaces, allowing viewers to read the track of the artist's life and creation. At the same time, it also shows that the different research systems and theoretical foundations constructed by the artist in the background of Jinxi, an ancient town in the south of China, have maximally reflected the originality of art blended into the local area within the space and time range under strict definition.

Xinjia Yang The Water Tower, the Granary and the Drunkard on the Second Floor

Xinjia Yang collects ten space scenes around the residence as narrative materials, clues and chapters, turning everyday reality into an "exceptional" Scene and synthesized a story named “The Water Tower, the Granary and the Drunkard on the Second Floor”. This story leads the reader among multi-dimensional superimposed scene spaces of fiction, reality, art, and text.

Jiaqing Mo Tasteful Seats Inside

Jiaqing Mo's work “Tasteful Seats Inside” is also a story “occurring” in Jinxi. In a seemingly ordinary farmhouse hotel in the ancient town, two guests wearing silver jumpsuits are sitting in a private dining room of the restaurant seeming weird yet natural. At the same time, a story unfolds on the street outside the window. A seemingly illogical piece of life — which itself has a window, the nature of being watched — creates a theater-like picture, like a spectator's lens guiding the audience to have a peak at this absurd box room story.

Sveta Shuvaeva Made in Jinxi, Made with Sun

“Made in Jinxi, Made with Sun” is deeply integrated with Jinxi’s local culture, extracting ordinary everyday objects and rethinking them from the perspective of contemporary art. Sveta Shuvaeva deliberately puts exposed photos back into the sun, letting the naturally washing colors and immersing them in the current time-space environment. This series also includes the creation of installation art, which will be presented in several outdoor spaces.

Carina Hesper Lucky Flower

The theme of creation will be Chinese traditions that are gradually disappearing. To the older generations of families, fake flower bouquets usually represent luck and wealth for the family, and they are kept for many years.

This tradition can be found especially in the old city of Shanghai. In the Netherlands, there is an extraordinary history of still life (Rembrandt, for example).

The artist will combine Chinese fake flower heritage with Dutch still life to visually demonstrate the great value of these fake flowers, and bring a new perspective to the theme from everyday life.

Jan Misker “Yoga.i.” Yoga Art Workshop

“Yoga.i.” is a series of yoga workshop heled by artist Jan as a yoga teacher to give the public a different experience from previous exhibitions. None of the workshop’s yoga mats were left empty, upholding Points’ mission of “life within art.” This series of activities is also supported by Jinxi’s Xiyue Yoga, which combined local cultural resources and stimulated the artist's contemporary creative energy.
